EasyFit Tacho Repair Kit

Our EasyFit tacho repair kits have been developed to provide an easy way of repairing Smiths tachometers (rev counters) found in many Classic Cars. The Easyfit kits are designed to directly replace the original circuit board using the existing mounting points and this makes the fitting very straightforward. The kit is supplied with gel filled insulation displacement connectors so no soldering is required and calibration is quick and easy using the built in stand alone calibration mode (no phone or computer required).

Features

  • No soldering

  • Neatly replaces existing circuit board, using same screws

  • Fit from rear - no need to remove dial and needle

  • On board, push button calibration - no need to connect to computer or phone

  • Suitable for positive and negative earth cars, no extra parts needed

  • Suitable for 4, 6 and 8 cylinder cars

  • Tacho-generator no longer needed

How it works

Smiths tachometers often fail because of faulty electronics or in other cases they are not useable because the vehicle has been upgraded to have electronic ignition. Another common problem is that the early RV type tachometers rely on a "tacho generator" to produce the drive signal for the tachometer. These tacho generators often fail or become inaccurate over time and are difficult and expensive to replace.

The EasyFit repair kit replaces the tachometer electronics with modern surface mount technology. The replacement circuit board fits easily onto the rear of the existing movement with no need to remove the needle or dial. The new electronics takes its signal directly from the ignition coil so no Tacho generator is required.

Will it fit?

The EasyFit repair kit is specifically designed for Smiths / Jaeger RV and RVI type tachometers. These tachometers can be easily identified as they have the letters "RV" or "RVI" marked on the dial (note that this lettering is very small and is sometimes at the bottom of the dial or at the base of the needle). The kit is not suitable for RVC type tachos.

The EasyFit Kit requires an internal case diameter of at least 82mm and the mounting hole arrangement on the back of the tacho must be as shown below (some early RV tachos have a different mounting hole arrangement and these are not compatible with the EasyFit Kit ). Dimensions are approximate to the nearest mm.

If your Tacho does not match these dimensions please see our UniTacho Tacho Repair Kit

Will the repaired tacho be compatible with my car's ignition system?
The EasyFit tacho repair kit is compatible with contact breakers and with most electronic ignition systems. It has been tested with Accuspark, Powerspark, Lumenition and 123 Ignition systems. If you have a high energy ignition system with current limiting please contact us for advice. The kit is not designed for use with CDI ignition systems, however, if your CDI system has a tacho output signal this may be compatible - please ask for details.

EasyFit Fitting Instructions

The EasyFit Tacho repair kits will repair three different types of Smiths / Jaeger tachometer - see below to choose the correct fitting instructions for your tachometer. There is a separate set of vehicle installation instructions which applies to all three tachometer types.

RV type - These have the letters "RV" marked in small lettering on the dial. They were originally driven from a Tacho Generator on the vehicle. Once the repair kit is fitted the tachometer will be driven directly from the ignition coil with no need for a tacho generator,

RVI Gen 1 Type - These have the lettering "RVI" marked on the dial and are driven from the ignition coil current. The ignition coil feed wire is looped through a transformer on the back of the case.

RVI Gen2 Type - These also have "RVI" marked on the dial. They are driven from the ignition coil current but the connection is via two bullet connectors on the back of the case.
